Batik - Sarah Jones / Marie-Therese King

This vibrant workshop explores the ancient Indonesian art of batik. Batik is the process of layering melted wax and water-based dye onto fabric or paper to create pictures or patterns. Over the weekend, you will have the chance to experiment with various materials and techniques producing your own unique artworks to take home.

The course is open to all abilities. No previous experience is required.

The Course (Two days)

Sarah and Marie-Therese will begin by demonstrating the various methods of applying wax and mark-making techniques. Learn to use Kystkas, tjantings, fan brushes, stamps and sponges to create different effects. Students will be encouraged to experiment with small samples before progressing to a 50cm x 50cm batik on cotton. You are welcome to bring along an idea or image that inspires you as a starting point for your design. Alternatively you may choose to work from one of our templates. There will be the option to try cracking and dipping your final piece to give a traditional characteristic batik effect.

The second day allows time to really ‘play’ with this magical medium on large pieces of paper in a free, fun and abstract way. These works can later be cut into sections and used as individual artworks or greetings cards. Throughout the workshop there will be one to one advice on design, composition and colour. A beautiful palette of dyes will be available for use on the course and list of tools/materials suppliers provided to take home.
