Pebble Mosaic (2 days)

Description

A playful introduction to the art of pebble mosaic. Create your own simple designs and make a pair of stepping stones or decorative roundels to enhance your garden. 

This course is all about natural, tactile materials and subtle contrasting tones. Take pleasure in the beachcombing process as you search for that perfect pebble. Following a brief introduction, we will start by exploring a few basic ideas on paper.  Simple motifs such as insects, plant forms or patterns work best or choose a graphic number, letter or symbol.

Using the ‘indirect’ technique, pebbles are positioned one-by-one into a circular mould to build up your design. At the end of day one, you will cast your pebble mosaic as a slab which is left to cure overnight.

Day two promises an exciting start as we open up our moulds and reveal the face of the mosaics for the first time! Building on day one’s achievements, you will go on to produce a second slab as a companion piece or stand alone feature.

You will take home a pair of circular mosaic pavers/decorative roundels, each measuring approx. 27cm in diameter. These can be set into the ground or displayed vertically against a wall.

Tutor: Peter Massey MA (RCA)

Peter and Alison are the founders of Zantium Studios, a creative partnership specialising in mosaic. Graduating from The Royal College of Art in 1994, Peter originally worked as an illustrator for clients such as Ladybird Books and The Natural History Museum. He developed a strong interest in mosaic and Zantium was established in 1998.

Materials

The materials fee includes your circular mould (to take home), pebbles, sand and casting compound. 
Materials fee: £30 to make 2 stepping stones (payable to the tutor at the end)
This is in addition to the course fee

Lunch & Refreshments

A tasty light lunch is included in the course fee. Help yourself to drinks and biscuits throughout the day with homemade cake mid-afternoon.

Arrival: Join us from 9.30am to settle in
Tuition: 10.00am – 4.30pm (with a break for lunch)
